Nothing says “family” like attacking children. Hiding behind their “family values” facade, the Florida Family Association (FFA) launched an email campaign targeting advertisers of a popular teen television show, Degrassi, because the show featured transgender and gay youth.
And yes, this is the same group that, earlier this month, flew a banner across all of Orlando “warning” the city of “Gay Day at Disney.” This is also the group led by David Canton, who in the early 90’s, published a book detailing his recovery from “porn addiction.” This can’t get any better. Except for that it does:
“Canton told The Huffington Post that the LGBT content ‘licentiously appealed to the prurient nature of teenagers, saying he believed that the scenarios also promoted behavior that doesn’t naturally occur in high school settings. ‘And I think that it is statistically improbable that you will have a female-to-male transgender who is in love with a lesbian or bisexual in a school setting.’
Has he been to a high school recently? Then Canton suddenly wants to get all paternalistic and worry about whether Degrassi will mess up our youngsters:
“[C]hildren don’t need an organization that is going to say it’s okay, live your life the way that you feel you should [as a transgender], because some kids might question their identity [at first] and end up having a more traditional lifestyle as they mature.”
For the David Canton’s of the world, the funny thing about morality is that they first have to learn that they don’t have any. Then through a twisted sense of reasoning, they license themselves to slam others for their immorality.
Lindsay Schuyler, Degrassi’s co-creator and executive producer told the Huffington Post:
“It is important for us that all of the emotions of the story are authentic, rather than just ripping [ideas] from the headlines and trying to be sensationalistic,” Schuyler said. “We don’t say, ‘Lets do a trans story or a school shooting’ just because it is going to get ratings. We come at it and we say, ‘How can we put a human voice to what is going on here?’ It is our mission to be as inclusive as possible.”
Teen Nick, Degrassi’s network, tells the Huffington Post that Canton’s email campaign hasn’t had an impact on advertisers. Neither has Canton’s book. Buy it online for 82 cents.
